Aerospace Education Committee

The Aerospace Education committee was formed in the first quarter 2007 and began its work by developing a Chapter Education Plan for 2007-2009.

The first step taken to implement the plan was to have a member of the committee represent the chapter in judging the projects of the Leeward District Science and Engineering Fair. In addition, we created a $250.00 Aerospace Excellence Award to be awarded at the State Science and Engineering Fair to the student with the best project with an Aerospace theme. The committee also arranged for the donation of four computers to the newly formed West Oahu Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol.

During 2007 Q2, the committee is staffing a booth at both the State Science and Engineering Fair and at the semi-annual meeting of the Hawaii Science Teachers Association. We will use these opportunities to explain the AFA programs available to support classroom science teachers.

The Chapter also provided partial financial support for the visit of Astronaut Ellen Baker to Hawaii. She visited Hickam to give a presentation to our school age children. In support of her visit, the committee renovated a full-scale Space Shuttle flight deck mockup which was used as part of the AFA display at the Science Fair.
